Judge Furious Over Mahama Murder Trial

Some of the suspects leaving the court premises

Judge of an Accra circuit court has expressed dissatisfaction with the undue delays in releasing the autopsy report of the late Major Maxwell Adams Mahama, who was brutally murdered at Denkyira-Obuase in the Central Region about five months ago.

The judge, Ebenezer Kwaku Ansah, has subsequently ordered the court’s registry to write to the Pathology Department of the 37 Military Hospital to furnish the Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service with the full autopsy report.

The court further ordered Dr. Lawrence Adusei, the pathologist who carried out the autopsy, to submit the report by the next adjourned date – October 26, 2017 – or appear before the court to explain what was causing the delay.

Twenty-two suspects have since been arrested by the police and are in prison custody assisting with further investigations whiles some others are still at large.

State prosecutor, DSP George Amega, told the court that the case investigators had forwarded the docket to the Attorney General but could not add the autopsy report as it was yet to be delivered by the hospital.

He said the full autopsy report was very necessary in carrying on with the case and prayed the court to order for the full report to enable the investigators to swiftly conduct their investigations.

He said it is not the intention of the state to delay the case as it is working assiduously to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Mr Kwaku Ansah, who was clearly surprised at how long it was taking for the report to be released, said he found it very strange that the report in a case that is of national interest was taking that long to be released.

Major Mahama was killed by some 22 suspects and others who are still at large during detachment duties at Denkyira-Obuasi..

Then army captain, Maxwell Mahama was on a 20-kilometre walk when he was reportedly mistaken for an armed robber by some women from whom he had bought some snails, when they sighted a side pistol with him.

7 Wee Gangsters Arrested In Tamale Forest

The arrested suspects and members of the taskforce

Seven persons, between the ages of 14 and 35 years, have been arrested in a forest near Tamale, the Northern Regional capital, for allegedly smoking marijuana (wee) and encroaching on the forest.

A joint military and police taskforce arrested them in an exercise initiated by the Tamale mayor to restore sanity and rid the Tamale forest of encroachers.

The taskforce was unable to arrest all the encroachers as it is believed they had a tip-off that the exercise was going to be embarked upon.

When DAILY GUIDE went to the forest with the security personnel, all structures put up there were destroyed and burnt by the taskforce.

Some large quantities of dry leaves suspected to be marijuana and some white substance suspected to be cocaine were retrieved from the arrested persons.
Tamale mayor Musah Superior himself was among the taskforce that swooped on the encroachers.

The action came after a 21-day ultimatum given by the mayor for all encroachers to vacate the forest had elapsed.

Mr Musah Superior said all individuals occupying the forest would be removed to make room for the achievement of the dream of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly – turning the forest into a recreational centre.
According to him, the metropolis would launch a fight against public smoking from October 31, 2017. This is part of a strategy to restore sanity and security in the metropolis in particular and the region at large.

Meanwhile, Mr Musah Superior has advised the encroachers – who are mostly teenagers – to enroll in schools or learn some vocational skills.

He said that his outfit would provide all the necessary support to individuals who want to engage in a trade.

The mayor charged persons with business ideas to contact his office with their ideas as the assembly might be able to help them acquire funds from state institutions such as MANSLOC to implement their ideas.

Court Demands JBs Autopsy Report

The late JB Danquah-Adu

An Accra Circuit Court has ordered the Pathology Department of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to furnish the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) with the full autopsy report on the late Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu, the slain New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Abuakwa North in the Eastern Region within one month.

Over the past weeks, the prosecution, led by DSP George Amegah, had prayed the court, presided over by Mr. AritNsemoh, for adjournments.

Although two persons, Daniel Asiedu, 19, aka Sexy Don Don – a phone dealer and Vincent Bosso aka Junior Agogo – a phone repairer- have been arraigned before the court for allegedly murdering the MP, no autopsy has been released to ascertain the actual cause of death of the former MP.

Sexy Don Don has been slapped with the charge of murder while Agogo faces abetment of murder.

They have since been remanded into police custody over the death of the MP.

State prosecutors earlier asked for more time for further investigations into the case.

The prosecution indicated that it has to get conclusive evidence in the matter.

The prosecution on July 29 told the court that the police have stumbled upon fresh leads in the case.

Although the prosecution did not disclose the nature of the information to the court, the prosecutor emphasized that the police were working on them.

But the judge, who was not happy with the delays and excuse for adjournment as presented by the prosecution, therefore ordered the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to release the autopsy report on the late MP to enable the case investigators to continue with their investigations.

The judge also remanded the suspects into prison custody.

The case has been adjourned to November 10, 2017.

Frank Annor Dompreh

The Majority in Parliament has assured that government is investigating a recent report by the Libyan government, which claimed that between 50 to 100 Ghanaians have joined the dreadful terrorist group, Islamic State in that country.

report issued by the Libyan government said Ghanaian migrants feature prominently as members of the terrorist group.

The report placed Ghana in the second highest category suggesting that between 50 to 100 Ghanaian migrants are frontline fighters for the so-called Islamic State in Libya.

Following the report, the Minority in Parliamentcharged government not to allow the Ghanaian IS fighters into the country until they are properly investigated and given security clearance.

“Government must put measures in place to ensure that none of these alleged Ghanaian Islamic State fighters are allowed to return to Ghana without strict security clearance and surveillance,” the Minority spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said at a press conference on Tuesday.

The Minority also called on government to ensure that Ghana’s international reputation is not affected over Libyan report.

But Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament, Frank Annor Dompreh, at a counter press conference said government will certainly break its silence on the matter after the investigation.

“This is not a matter that is new, the government is fully aware of this. We have done enough checks at the Ministry [of Foreign Affairs], and the Ministry is already aware. What is important is that, the ministry is conducting investigations on this matter… We think that soonest, the Republic and for that matter the government, will come up with the full disclosure and findings of what indeed is the truth or otherwise,” he said.

Mr. Dompreh also challenged the report,  saying for now, the identity of the supposed Ghanaians believed to have joined the terrorist group, has not been confirmed.

“In the report, it is being alleged that some Ghanaians have been mentioned – the authenticity of these Ghanaians have not been proven at this stage,” he added.

KNUST student joins ISIS

This comes on the back of reports that a graduate from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Nazir Nortei Alema had joined the terrorist group in 2015.

Harry Sarfo, a German Ghanian, had also in the early part of 2017, confessed to having been a fighter for ISIS.

The 28-year-old, who is serving a three-year prison term in Germany on terrorism charges, said he had however avoided participating in the group’s violence.

President AkufoAddo with Bolin-Lana

The Bolin Lana Mahamadu Abdulai, regent of the Abudu Royal Gate has urged Ghanaians to give President Nana Akufo-Addo their maximum support and cooperation to deliver on his campaign promises as he has already started.

The Regent of the Abudu royal family has praised the president for appointing a lot of northerners to serve in his government.

The Bolin-Lana declared his support and that of his kingdom for the president and his government while praying for the success and fulfillment of the president’s policies especially the pro-poor policies. He said Dagombas must unite for their socio-economic development and progress.

The Abudu Regent bemoaned the recurring acute water shortage that normally hits the locality, and admonished government to treat the problem with urgency.

The only source of water supply for the area has been left in ruins. The plant which used to supply water to the entire kingdom is now challenged, hence its capacity has drastically reduced and it is not able to supply the needed quantities of water for the area and its environs.

“I appeal to you to replace the treatment plant for us so we can have water flowing, a frequent water supply for that matter,” he pleaded.

The president has, however, assured the Abudu Family Regent of his government’s commitment to put an end to the acute water crisis in the Northern Region.

He revealed that government has secured a credit facility of $30 million from the Exim Bank of India to establish a water treatment plant which will pump water from the Oti River.

President Akufo-Addo indicated that all paper works for the commencement of the project will be done by the first quarter of 2018 and shortly after, the construction will kick start.

When completed, the facility will serve water to thousands of indigenes in the area and its environs.

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, a Deputy Ministry of Information, has said about 400 gas stations are located in residential areas across the country.
Meanwhile, the President has stated that the government would soon come out with a policy intervention to address the frequent gas explosions.
Both the President and Mr Nkrumah made their statements following the Atomic Junction gas explosion, which occurred on Saturday night.
Seven persons have been confirmed dead, while 132 sustained various degree of injuries in the multiple explosions that started from the Mansco Gas Station and extended to the adjacent Total Filling Station.
Sixty four of the injured persons were treated and discharged, while 68 are still receiving medical treatment in six different health facilities.
Some of the health facilities treating victims of the explosion are the Pentecost Hospital in Madina, 37 Military Hospital, Ridge Hospital and the Police Hospital.

The venue of the disaster has been condoned off by security agencies, while investigations are ongoing to establish the cause of the explosion.

Officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Police Service and other security agencies have set up post at the place to prevent intruders.

The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and some government officials visited the scene of the disaster on Sunday to assess the situation.
Dr Bawumia assured Ghanaians that the government would implement stringent policies to resolve the matter.

Some members of the public, in an interview with Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Sunday, were unanimous in their call for the government to be serious with the matter and resolve the phenomenon once and for all.

Kwasi Eshun, who lives close to a gas filling station at Gbawe in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, expressed fear about his safety and that of his family in view of the frequent gas explosions.
He suggested that gas filling stations be taken away from residential areas, while the National Petroleum Authority and Environmental Protection Agency undertook constant monitoring to check safety standards of those facilities to forestall future occurrence.

Ghana has recorded eight major explosions in three years from 2014.

Six of them occurred in the Greater Accra Regions, while the Western and Central Regions have recorded one each.

Assemblies Of God React To Gas Explosions

Rev Prof Paul Frimpong-Manso

The General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Rev Prof Paul Frimpong-Manso, has joined other Ghanaians in expressing concern about the recent spate of avoidable gas explosions to hit the country.

In a release on the subject, the church expressed concern that so much properties and lives have been lost as a result of the gas explosions, adding that the spate of the tragedies has reached alarming proportions.

“The increasing cases of gas explosion and fire outbreaks in Ghana has reached alarming proportions in recent times, and therefore it has become an issue of national concern in view of their negative effects on the environment, economy and human life in general,” he said, adding that “what is even more worrying is that some of these explosions are due to human errors and could have been avoided if the owners or operators of the filling stations as state agencies responsible for approving their siting, licensing and supervision had exercised due diligence in the discharge of their duties.’

The Church expressed happiness with the reaction of President Akufo-Addo since the tragedy struck, especially his appeal to his compatriots to recognize that all have to make adjustments to guarantee the safety and security of others to avoid recurrence of the tragedy.

The church, the release went on, sees the government’s resolve to lay out a national policy to obviate a recurrence of such tragedies ‘as a step in the right direction.’

The church pledged its full support to the government in this fight, and appealed to others to do same so that the menace can be nipped in the bud.

The Assemblies of God expressed their condolences to the bereaved families and asked all to stand with them in prayer in these trying times.

Continuing, the church said “we also appeal for any form of assistance one may wish to offer the bereaved families and the injured to help mitigate their loss.’

The church saluted personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Police and others, who joined hands to manage the emergency.

“Never again should our dear country be inundated with horror of such disturbing proportion, particularly those attributable to human error and indiscretion,” the church stressed.

I Can Accept Some Blame For Atomic Gas Explosion, But…. – EPA Boss

Peter Abum Sarkodie

Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Peter Abum Sarkodie, has stated that his outfit cannot entirely take the blame for last Saturday’s gas explosion at Atomic Junction.

The explosion has so far rendered people jobless, whiles records also have it that 7 persons have lost their lives with 132 others injured.

Speaking to CITI FM, the Executive Director of the Agency indicated that even though they have a hand in providing documents for the affected gas station to operate, they are not the only unit per the laws of the country to ensure that they [gas station] comply with the required safety precautions required of them.

“ . . Safety measures do not come under the jurisdiction of the EPA . . . a lot of institutions are responsible for ensuring sound environmental procedures in the country, so partly, I can accept some blame but not all. The Bulk of what happened can’t be directed at the doorsteps of the EPA”, he said.

He noted “We were involved in giving the operator the permit to do so . . . and at a point were mandated to go for inspection and monitoring which we did, so if we left the site and we went back to our office and somebody was to discharge and there is a leakage of gas resulting in a fire outbreak, I think the blame should be laid squarely at the doorstep of the person who was involved in the discharge.”

Mahama’s ‘Allawa’ Scrap ‘Senseless’ Move Ever – GRNMA

Ex-President John Dramani Mahama

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has said the Mahama administration’s cancellation of trainee allowances for nurses and midwives was a senseless and irrational decision.

The allowance regime was just restored by the Akufo-Addo government.

It will see over 58,000 trainee nurses and midwives in various public nursing and midwifery training colleges (NMTC’s) and a little over 45,000 teacher trainees in 41 public colleges of education, receive over GHS400.00 every month from the Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) while in school.

Following the restoration, Greater Accra PRO of GRNMA, Douglas Adu-Fokuo, indicated in a press statement released on Wednesday, 11 October that: “It is very unfortunate to hear people like Solomon Nkansah [Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress], saying: ‘Restoration of trainee allowances is needless’. Well that is democracy, so permit me to say: ‘The cancelation of trainees’ allowances is the ever-senseless decision on earth’”.

“I advise my brother, Solomon Nkansah to get a copy of the research work by GRNMA and study it carefully before making such utterances. If trainees allowance is needless, why did the previous government attempt to deceive the trainees by paying them that deceitful coins on table top as allowance, two days before election day?” he questioned.

Expressing gratitude to the current government for restoring the allowance, the association advised nurse and midwife trainees to put in their utmost best and improve on their attitude towards work whenever they are on clinical rotation, adding: “As it is the responsibility of government to make its citizens comfortable, it is also our responsibility to improve on our contribution to healthcare services”.

Below is the full statement:

STATEMENT TO THE MEDIA

Restoration of Nurse/Midwife Trainees Allowances, A sensible decision by government…

Nurse /Midwife Trainees should improve on attitude towards work during clinical rotations to justify the restoration of allowance…

This period should be a happy moment for all trainees and parents. The need for the restoration of allowance for trainees has been justified by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association severally. It is very unfortunate that the previous government was not ready to take a critical look at the research the association submitted to guide them to make a good decision by restoring the allowance.

Would love to take the opportunity to thank President Nana Addo, the Vice President Dr Bawumia, the Minister for Health and his deputies for fulfilling their promise. Much gratitude to the National Executives of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, the National Executives of the Ghana Nurse Midwife Trainees Association, for their contribution to the successful restoration of the allowance. I call on the Ministry of Health and the government to communicate effectively to the public on the “allowances without bonding” and implications on employment. It is my hope that unemployed nurses will soon be employed and measures will be put in place to make unemployment among Nurses and delayed salaries and arrears a thing of the past.

I advise the nurse/ midwife trainees to put their utmost best and improve on their attitude towards work whenever they are on clinical rotations. As it the responsibility of government to make its citizens comfortable, it is also our responsibility to improve on our contribution to healthcare services.

It is very unfortunate to hear people like Solomon Nkansah saying “restoration of Trainees allowances is needless “. Well that is democracy, so permit me to say “the cancelation of trainees’ allowances is the ever senseless decision on earth”.

I advise my brother, Solomon Nkansah to get a copy of the research work by GRNMA and study it carefully before making such utterances. If trainees allowance is needless, why did the previous government attempt to deceive the trainees by paying them that deceitful coins on table top as allowance, two days before election day?

Let us all be responsible citizens and welcome good policies like trainees allowance and free SHS, as we reject bad policies like toll levy.

Bolgatanga N.T.C Tutors And Students Want Principal Out Over “Chop-Chop”

Some students demonstrating and demanding for their allowance
After several letters and petitions to various Authorities connected to the development and the running of the Bolgatanga Nurses Training College, Tutors and students of the College, on Wednesday October 11, decided to implement their threats, by locking out the Principal, Baba Awalu .
The Students demonstrates to get the attention of Authorities higher than their Principal, to the need to improve on their classroom and dormitory accommodations to create an enabling environment for their studies. They also complained of poor sanitation management and demanded for proper accountability for the development levies they pay to the College.
The third year students of the College want the Principal, Baba Awalu to produce their GHc450.00 allowance that was paid by the then National Democratic Congress government in December 2016, to be distributed to each Trainee of the College.
The Tutors on the other hand, locked out the Principal on Tuesday, so as to prevent him from tempering with documents that could be used against him in some mismanagement cases leveled against him.
The Tutors want Authorities higher than the Principal, to get him to step aside to allow an investigation into alleged breach of procurement Law, since he assumed office.
They also accused the Principal, Baba Awalu of misappropriating the College’s Funds and wants him to be changed immediately and be made to pay back whatever he has misappropriated.
For many years, students of the Bolgatanga Nurses Training College have complained of poor and inadequate toilet facilities and other sanitation problems, but very little seem to have been done to change the situation.
It is very common to see female and male students squatting in bushes and in and around uncompleted buildings in the Zaare community, where the College is located, to defecate on daily basis. This situation has caused a bad relation between the students and the Youth of the community, because the Youth, beat and humiliate the Nursing Trainees, anytime they get them defecating openly.
It’s been over 60 years since the Bolgatanga Nurses Training College was established and yet, the College cannot boast of seeing any major renovation or addition in its facilities, even though the College’s admissions keep increasing and students keep paying development levies.
This has resulted in an inadequate classrooms, offices and Students accommodations. The electricity system is gradually breaking down and at the time the students and Tutors were demonstrating, not all Departments of the College had light.
In the night, the Student’s are not able learn as expected, because of the poor lighting system in the College. Classrooms that are supposed to have five fans and bulbs for effective learning at night, now have two or in many cases only one bulb is available.
The Students’ Representative Council President, Simon Kombian said the leadership of the Upper East Regional Health Directorate, has assured that, it will do everything possible to get their grievances addressed.
The students later presented their petition to the Upper East Regional Health Directorate and one to be given to the  Upper East Regional Minister, Rockson Bukari.
Meanwhile, the Principal of the Bolgatanga Nurses Training College, Bawa Awalu has said that, the allegations that Tutors are raising are not new, and are being investigated.
He want the Tutors to open his office to allow him to work, since that office is a public office meant for him to work for the state.

Nanumba Chiefs Kick Against Naa Dawuni’s Burial

Chiefs of the Namumba Traditional  Area

Chiefs of the Nanumba Traditional Area have warned that they would resist any attempt to bury the late Nakpa Naa in Bimbilla town because he had never been enskinned as Bimbilla Naa.

According to them, any attempt to bury the late Nakpa Naa Dawuni in Bimbilla would not bring peace and unity but rather would aggravate the conflict situation in the area.

Elders of the Nanumba Traditional Area said during his visit to some parts of the Northern Region, President Nana Akufo-Addo indicated that his government would not interfere in any chieftaincy matters and warned that he would not hesitate to sanction any of his appointees who would meddle in any chieftaincy issue.

“We pause here to ask whether Bimbilla chieftaincy crisis is part of the chieftaincy issues that His Excellency was talking about,” the chiefs wondered.

Their leader, Lung Naa, at a media briefing in Tamale, said they strongly suspected that some politicians in the Nanung area are behind the plans to forcefully bury the late Nakpa Naa Dawuni in Bimbilla, against the   customs of the traditional area.

Lung Naa categorically stated that “Nakpa Naa Salifu Dawuni died as Nakpa Naa hence, should be buried as Nakpa Naa and not Bimbilla Naa.”

He appealed to the president to walk his talk by bringing such politicians to book before they turn the entire Nanung into chaos.

“Mr. President, what we want now is peace. We want you to use your office to help cement peace and unity by ensuring that the right thing is done,” he appealed.

Meanwhile, a document sighted by DAILY GUIDE signed by the Chairman of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), Salifu Saeed (Regional Minister) indicated that REGSEC and DISEC, acting on a medical report on the deterioration state of the mortal remains of the late Salifu Dawuni who died in March 2014, had directed the immediate burial of the late chief in his private home in Bimbilla.

It further stated that “this is without prejudice to the Bimbilla chieftaincy dispute which was determined by the National House of Chiefs, but is currently before the Supreme Court for final determination.”

Mr Salifu Saeed has advised the family not to engage in any act that would prejudice the case before the Supreme Court or endanger the peace of the area.

Information Minister Debunks Media Reports

Mustapha Abdul-Hamid

Information Minister Mustapha Abdul-Hamid has discredited media reports that he abandoned a team of journalists who were covering President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s tour of the Upper East Region after their vehicle had broken down.

A release issued and signed by the minister stated that the vehicle that broke down was not the one that was hired by the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, for journalists covering the president’s visit to the region.

According to the release, Mr Arhin has a dedicated corps of journalists in every region who cover presidential trips and that the team of journalists who were said to have been stranded were not part of the official presidential press corps.

It explained that the Public Relations Officer of the Regional Coordinating Council, Godwin Nkunu, hired the bus in question for some other journalists chosen by him and unknown to the presidential communication team.

The release said the information minister “merely chanced upon their broken down vehicle because he went to the hospital and, therefore, did not join the official convoy.”

It added, “They were in the company of Godwin Nkunu who was at that time making calls to get them another vehicle.”

The minister, stated the release, stopped and also asked that a vehicle be procured from Bolgatanga to pick them up, but the journalists themselves said that it would be difficult to get a good vehicle in Bolgatanga at the time.

The minister, who had room for three persons in his vehicle, proceeded with three of the newsmen, and asked Mr Nkunu to find a vehicle for the rest to catch up with the presidential team.

“Indeed, Godwin Nkunu found them another vehicle and they continued as scheduled,” the release indicated.

Agric Students Demand Alawa

The students picketing at the ministry

Students from the various agriculture training colleges in the country have demanded the immediate restoration of their allowances by the current Akufo-Addo administration.

About 400 students from the five colleges of agriculture, namely Kwadaso Agric College, Ejura Agric College, Ohawu Agric College, Damango Agric College and Animal Health and Production College Pong, Tamale, on Wednesday picketed at the forecourt of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) amidst singing and drumming to demand jobs and the restoration of their allowances, which were scrapped in 2015 by the erstwhile Mahama administration.

They are making the demands barely 24 hours after the President Akufo-Addo restored allowances of about 58,000 nursing trainees across the country and declared his intentions to invest heavily in the education of Ghanaian children.

“I have chosen to invest in the education and in the future of our young men and women, and I will use the blessings the Almighty has so amply bestowed on us to this end,” President Akufo-Addo said in Sunyani on Tuesday in a speech to ‘launch the restoration of the nursing trainee allowances.

Speaking to DAILY GUIDE, National President of the Agric Colleges Students Union (ACSU), Chimbur Sams Sanika, said that the scrapping of their allowances has brought untold hardship to students in the various colleges over the last two years.

There are about 3,000 agric students nationwide and Mr Sanika could not fathom why government restored allowances of about 58,000 nurses and left out agric students.

“We are left behind in terms of policy making in the country.”

Mr Sanika complained about how the various colleges lacked infrastructure and logistics which affects not only students but teachers.

According to him, the situation has generally affected the performance of students in the colleges over the years with little being done to tackle it.

Government recently announced what it termed a ‘Marshall Plan’ for the agricultural sector which will see it engage about 2,000 students from the various colleges to serve as extension officers.

Minister Speaks

Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Afriyie Akoto, who addressed the students after several hours of picketing under the scorching sun to hear what government had to say about their issues, gave the assurance that their demands would be looked at and further decisions would be communicated to them.

He said that there was a high-powered government delegation in Washington DC, USA to hold talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to remove the ban on the employment of people into the civil service, saying when that is done, direct employment would not be a problem.

Dr. Akoto bluntly told the agric students that the promise to restore allowances during the 2016 elections was for trainee teachers and nurses “and that is why it seems they have had priority.”

He said, “Your case came a bit later and I just submitted it to cabinet about 2 or 3 weeks ago and is going through the process, so please bear with government so your demands would be looked at.”

The two suspects after their arrest.

Two Nigerians have been apprehended by the Ashaiman District Police for dealing in dangerous drugs without authority.

The suspect, Ali Haruna, 48, was reportedly in possession of a total of 1,000 pieces of assorted dangerous drugs, including Tramadol, Diazem Tablets, Axzol and Nitrazepam.

The other suspect Ali Mubanoo, 50, had in his possession 500 pieces of assorted drugs, including Tramadol and Eskazepam.

ASP Joseph Benefo Darkwah, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Tema Regional Police Command, in a statement, disclosed that the Ashaiman Police, acting on intelligence, arrested the two Nigerians at Old Tulaku, a suburb of Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region.

According to him, the suspects, in their caution statements, admitted selling the dangerous drugs to customers, who are mostly the youth of Ashaiman.

He noted that the suspects would be arraigned before court after investigations.

The excessive abuse of Tramadol by some of the youth in the country has become a major concern to stakeholders and the general public.

The development, according to experts, could jeopardize the future of the country if not addressed.

Some youth normally abuse cocaine and marijuana to enhance their sexual prowess to boost their immune system.

It is against the rules of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) to sell drugs such as Tramadol to persons without prescription, but the drugs are being sold by some foreign nationals who have invaded the country.

Tramadol belongs to a high class of painkillers which should not be abused.

NDC Wades Into Bimbilla Chieftaincy Dispute

$

0

The minority National Democratic Congress (NDC) in parliament has waded into the chieftaincy dispute at Bimbilla in the Northern Region, warning the government to stop the intended burial of the late Nakpa Naa, Salifu Dawuni in Bimbilla at all cost.

The minority said Bimbilla has been beset with chieftaincy dispute resulting in the imposition of a long-standing curfew on the town.

The minority therefore indicated that allowing the late Nakpa Naa – whose eligibility as a recognized chief of Bimbilla is a subject pending before the Supreme Court – to be buried at Bimbilla could worsen the security situation in the town and lead to further bloodshed.

The party gave the warning yesterday at a hurriedly organized press briefing in parliament.

Spokesperson on Interior and Defence, James Agalga, who led the media briefing, said that residents of Bimbilla had started fleeing the town after the intended burial of the late Nakpa Naa, Sailifu Dawuni was made public.

The minority alleged that some powerful politicians in the area are behind the planned burial of the late chief, which could seriously undermine the fragile peace in the area.

“The NDC is very much concerned about this development in Bimbilla as it has the potential to compromise the peace, order, security and stability of the area,” the minority said.

According to Mr Agalga, the planned burial of the late Nakpa Naa without consultation with the relevant traditional authority in the area has the potential to compromise the authority of the traditional authority and also the peace of the area.

He explained that when President Nana Akufo-Addo visited the Northern Region recently, he admonished his appointees to desist from interfering in chieftaincy matters and that such matters be left to the traditional authorities. Agalga therefore said he did not understand why some politicians are still meddling in chieftaincy matters.

Agalga, who is the NDC MP for Builsa North, said the minority was even more worried especially when members of the Gbugmalili family – a faction in the chieftaincy dispute – held an emergency press conference in Accra yesterday, drawing the government’s attention to a possible mayhem in Bimbilla if the burial goes ahead.

The minority therefore called on the government to put a freeze on the burial till the case is eventually determined at the Supreme Court to avoid any violence.

President Sirleaf receiving a copy of the new passport

One of Ghana’s leading security printing companies, Buck Press, has received praises when the Liberian e- Passport whose printing contracted it landed was outdoored with outgoing President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf becoming the maiden recipient.

Earlier, the outgoing President performed the official launch of the e-biometric travel document alongside the opening of an Expedited Application Service Centre at the Bureau of Passports and Visas of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Giving a background of the e-Passport, the Deputy Minister of Legal Affairs, Cllr Deweh E. Gray informed President Sirleaf that the negotiations with Buck Press Limited, the Ghanaian company, was an inter-agency collaboration  including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice, Liberian Revenue Authority, Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, National Security Agency and others.

Buck Press, by this feat, has proven that it can handle every modern security printing; their sophistication not posing any challenge.

The new e-Passport is characterized by advanced technology which will no longer have a 3D barcode but rather a RFID microprocessor chip implanted into the book without the ability of detecting it physically with the eyes or touch of the hand. The e-passport will hold all ten fingerprints in addition to the facial image of the holder on the RFID

An elated President Johnson-Sirleaf had remarked just before the launch of the standardized e-Passport that ‘I remember the days when I was denied a passport by my country but because I was working in the United States and had a resident permit at the time I was issued  a refugee travel document which I used for international travels.’

One of the priorities of the Liberian Foreign Ministry, the Minister of Foreign Affairs said, is the commitment to handle passport requests in Accra and Abuja.

With the launch of the travel document, Liberia has become the latest country to become an upgraded member of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

The Liberian authorities are said to have expressed delight that Buck Press has delivered on time as required of them at the signing of the contract for the production of the e-travel document.

Busted! From right Kwame Adoboye, David Akusina (receiver), Abu Mohammed and Alima Mumuni in police custody

The Osu Police have apprehended three gentlemen and a lady for allegedly snatching a taxi cab from its driver by drugging him at Osu Oxford street.

The suspects are Alima Mumuni aka Sadia, 18, Kwame Adoboye aka Opostu, 18, Abu Mohammed, 22, and David Akusina, 28.

They were said to have put a drug identified as D10 tromo pills into an energy drink and offered it to the driver.

After taking the drink, the driver reportedly fell unconscious due to the drug overdose and was dumped at the roadside by the suspects and they drove the vehicle away

They later took the car to Kwame Nkrumah Circle and sold it to David Akusina for GH¢5,000.

The Osu District Crime Officer, ASP Richard Daplah said the three suspects committed the act on May 2016.

Suspect Alima Mumuni, the lady amongst the gang hired the services of the taxi driver (named withheld)  in charge of a Toyota Corolla with registration number GN 5103-12, from Nkrumah Circle to Osu Oxford Street to pick some friends for a party.

When they got to Osu, suspect Alima asked the driver to wait while she got down to call the friend whom she claimed were in a nearby container to join the vehicle.

While waiting, Alima came back to inform the driver that her friends were still dressing up and so they should wait for a while.

She then went back to the container and brought a can of energy drink to the driver to enjoy while they wait for the friends.

The driver after taking the drink became drowsy and fell unconscious.

Suspect Kwame Adoboye who knows how to drive, drove the vehicle together with the other accomplices to a quiet place where they pulled the driver off the car.

They then went to Nkrumah Circle to meet David Akusina who is known to be trading in stolen goods and sold the vehicle to him for GH¢5, 000.

Akusina paid GH¢3, 000 and took the vehicle with the promise to pay the rest later but never did.

The taxi driver was later rescued and taken to hospital for treatment after which he reported the matter to the Osu Police.

On October 7, 2017, the driver spotted Alima at Nkrumah Circle and caused her arrest.

Through Alima, the other two accomplices were apprehended.

They also led police to arrest David Akusina, the buyer of the car at Circle.

The vehicle, according to David was re-sprayed and sent to Bolgatanga to be used.

The police are yet to recover the vehicle.

Further investigations conducted by the police revealed that the suspects put two D10 tromo pills into the energy drink which was given to the driver.

Naba Musah Akambonga, the President of Council of Zongo Chiefs in Ashanti Region exchanging pleasantries with Otumfuo Osei Tutu

Naba Musah Akambonga, the President of the Council of Zongo Chiefs in the Ashanti Region, says he said fervent prayers for the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in the holy city of Mecca.

The traditional leader prayed for long life, protection and Allah’s favour for Otumfuo Osei Tutu.

Naba Akambonga, who is also the Frafra Chief of Kumasi, was part of the thousands of Ghanaian pilgrims that travelled from the country to Mecca to perform this year’s Hajj.

Upon his safe return to Ghana, he stormed the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi last week to officially introduce himself to Otumfuo, his overlord and also brief him about what transpired in Mecca.

“I was part of the pilgrims that travelled to Mecca this year, and I used my stay in the holy city to pray fervently for you, Asanteman and mother Ghana. I prayed for Allah’s special protection for you,” he told Otumfuo.

Naba Akambonga, who was recently appointed as a Hajj Board Member by President Akufo-Addo, informed Otumfuo that he trekked to Mecca in the company of other heads of communities in Kumasi.

The President of Council of Zongo Chiefs used the occasion to present items such as specially made clothes from Mecca, Zam Zam Water (holy water) from Mecca, cola nuts and assorted minerals to Otumfuo.

The Asantehene expressed delight that Naba Akambonga had returned home safely from Mecca and he also prayed for success for the Frafra chief in all his future endeavours.

‘Don’t Give Out Atiwa Forest For Bauxite Mining’

Leaders of the students group at the press conference

Government has been asked to remove Atewa Forest Reserve from the list of places targeted for bauxite mining to ensure that Ghanaians consume uncontaminated food and water.

The Coalition of Students in Conservation (COSIC), which made the call, said the Atewa forest is one of the important water sources in the country, providing over 5 million people in Greater Accra Region, Eastern Region and some parts of the Central Region with drinking water.

Addressing a news conference in Kumasi, Judicial Chairman of COSIC, Francis Kpatakpa, indicated that rivers such as Densu, Ayensu and Birim all take their source from the Atewa Forest Reserve.

According to him, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) predicted a major water crisis by 2030 in the country.

This should motivate all Ghanaians to contribute to securing fresh water sources in order to avert danger.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in July, this year announced a partnership agreement in which the Government of China would offer Ghana $15 billion in exchange of bauxite resources, with Atewa Forest being one of the areas under consideration.

But the Coalition of Students in Conservation believes the risk outweighs the benefits to be derived in the barter trade agreement, calling on government not to create any conditions that may threaten the existence of the present and future generations.

“We appreciate the efforts by government to raise the needed funds to address the developmental needs of our people, but must be cautious,” the students’ coalition said.

Mr Kpatakpa appealed to President Akufo-Addo to use his executive powers to declare Atewa forest a national park, asserting that this would provide some level of security and stability for the implementation of sustainable activities.
