The maiden International Conference on Development Engineering held in Accra, has ended with a call on Africa to make development engineering an integral part of the continent’s development agenda.

The two-day conference, organized by Academic City University College in partnership with Worcester Polytechnic Institute, USA, brought together experts to discuss ways of pushing the development engineering agenda beyond its current limits by drawing on new design thinking, cross-cultural co-design and project-based learning.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Fred McBagonluri, President of Academic City University College stressed the need to co-define and co-create solutions that would contribute to improving all areas of the economy especially the developing countries.

“Developing countries can no longer afford to be passive participants in developing efforts or mere recipient of technology created elsewhere under different set of conditions and shared by development,” he said.

He noted that the conference provided a valuable opportunity for researchers and industry players to dialogue and share experiences and deployed outcomes in the various communities to ensure socioeconomic development.

Prof. Winston Wole Soboyejo, Senior Vice President and Provost of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, USA, remarked, “As Africans, we should begin to see the numerous challenges on the continent as an inspiration to engender us to critically scrutinize these challenges and provide measures to develop the continent.”

“Over the years, westerners that have undertaken research and projects in Africa have been inspired. I have realized that the knowledge they gain here has a greater value than getting them a good job. They are inspired by the knowledge gained in Africa to develop solutions to pressing challenges across the globe,” he added.

He questioned why the continent was richly endowed with numerous natural resources but remained among the poorest continents in the world. “It is time, we start to place emphasis on the combination of theory and practical to achieve impact in all sectors,” he said.

Leslie Alex Ayeh, President of the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE), stated that the aim of the conference was in line with GhIE’s commitment to leverage engineering and technology to achieve sustainable development.

He commended Academic City and WPI for the initiative and expressed hope that the conference would help discover great ideas which would be relevant to the development agenda of the African continent.

Some of the conference speakers included Ing. Kwabena Agyepong, Executive Secretary of GhIE; Adelaide Asante Asantewaa, Chief Operation Officer, AIMS Ghana; Prof. Robert Krueger, Associate Professor, WPI; Prof. Laureen Elgert, WPI; Ing. Dr. Kwame Boakye, Former President of GhIE; Dr. Mahamadou Lamine Sagna, American University, Nigeria; Dr. Linda Deigh and Dr. Lucy Agyepong, both from Academic City.

Dr. Bawumia being mobbed by his hosts

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, last weekend, received a wonderful reception when he honoured an invitation to be the guest of honour for a Maulud programme in the Accra suburb.

The celebration of the birthday of the Holy Prophet Mohammed is marked by various Islamic clerics across the country during which the Vice President is an important invitee.

An announcement had preceded his arrival, setting the stage for an exciting reception when he touched down at the Sukurua venue of the programme.

The place was thrown in a state ecstasy when he appeared, a spectacle underscoring the extent of love Zongo residents have for the Vice President.
They cheered him even as he was in the car, with many of them seeking to reach him before he alighted, a situation which had the security details doing extra work to control the surging crowd.

Dr. Bawumia was obviously infected with the excitement as he too returned the positive gestures.

He used the period allotted him to speak to ask the faithful to emulate the life of the Prophet Muhammad in their daily lives.

He spoke against violence and to respect divergent political positions especially as we approached the 2020 polls.

He reminded them about the commitment of the President to the development of the Zongos as epitomized by the creation of a Zongo Minister and subsequently the Zongo Development Fund to which credit he added were over 200 completed or ongoing projects in the various Zongos across the country.

Under the auspices of the Zongo Development Fund, he went on, 40 scholarships had been secured for Zongo students to study medicine in Cuba, beneficiaries of which had landed in Havana already.

The attendees at the programme were many and included Islamic clerics, Muslim chiefs and scholars.

Coronavirus: Most Ghanaian Students In Wuhan Don’t Want To Be Evacuated – GHS Boss

Dr. Patrick Aboagye

The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Patrick Aboagye says government’s decision not to evacuate Ghanaians in China over the outbreak of coronavirus in that city was partly due to the disinterest of majority of the students there to return home.

According to him, the government through intelligence and surveys gathered that most of the students in Wuhan, China, where the outbreak started did not want to be evacuated.

“A significant number didn’t want to come home. We did a survey, those who wanted to come home were few,” he told Bernard Avle on the Point of View on Monday.

“We are talking about 162 students in Wuhan and the Ambassador [to China] was in touch with them every other day. We had information about the situation they were in and the number of those who really wanted to come back home. We also assessed whether the systems and protection that they were getting there [in China] was adequate, if it was inadequate we would have brought them,” Dr. Aboagye noted.

There have been divergent views on the evacuation of Ghanaian students living in Wuhan.

The government announced in February that it was not ready to evacuate the students despite calls by some of the students and their parents that they needed to return to Ghana due to the risk they faced and challenges in accessing basic medical and food supplies.

But the government shot down the idea.

Dr. Aboagye said it was not best practice to heed the calls by the students especially because they were getting better care in China than they would if they were evacuated to Ghana.

“It is not the best practice as far as public health is concerned and WHO has even advised against such evacuations…Our position was that, because they were getting good care and support, we felt that there was no point in bringing them but we continue to watch the situation and as you can see the numbers are coming down in China,” he said.

He added that, “even if you get the disease, you are probably better off in China because they have experience managing that kind of condition.”

Ghanaian authorities not aware of Wuhan students’ plights

A former National Organizer of Ghanaian students in China, Daniel Nii Lartey, in an interview on Eyewitness News earlier in February said the Ministry of Health’s decision not to evacuate students in Wuhan may be from a position of ignorance of their true state of desperation and challenges there.

According to him, the donation of money to the students there does not mean much to the students as most grocery stores are locked up and the students are unable to access various other services.

He insisted that evacuating the students will be the best thing to do to safeguard their health and ensure that they are psychologically sound to pursue their studies.

Evacuations from Wuhan

More than 14 countries have evacuated their citizens from Wuhan over the outbreak, adhering to strict World Health Organization protocols for evacuation including holding the evacuees in quarantine for two weeks before reintegrating them into society.

Iran, Vietnam, Australia and New Zealand, South Korea, India, Brazil among others have evacuated their citizens.

South Africa recent agreed to evacuate its students although many argue it is too late to do so now.

Some of the persons accused of plotting to overthrow government are said to have held discussions on whether or not to kill the president once their plot succeeds.

They are also alleged to have planned to acquire electronic equipment solely for the purpose of jamming the National Communications Authority’s system to render all broadcasting stations except the state broadcaster useless.

These are allegations made by Senior State Attorney Hilda  Craig who on Tuesday morning urged the Kaneshie District Court to commit the 10 accused persons to stand trial at the High Court.

Beyond the killing plot, Ms Craig said discussions were also held towards capturing top public officials.

This includes the Vice President, Speaker of Parliament and the Chief of Defence Staff.

She further alleged that ‘the killing of the President’ discussion, however, had the option of being abandoned once the President agreed to announce that his government had been toppled.

She said the accused persons were members of the NGO Take Action Ghana which was to be used as a vehicle to embark on series of demonstrations geared at toppling government.

She added that they procured weapons and test-fired same and contracted persons to manufacture grenades, pistols among other dangerous weapons.

The 10 persons standing trial are Frederick Yao Mac-Palm, Dornyah “Ezor” Kafui (a local weapon manufacturer), Bright Allan Debrah Ofosu (aka BB or ADC)(freight manager).

Colonel Samuel Kojo Gameli and WO2 Esther Saan, Lance Corporal Ali Solomon, Corporal Seidu Abubakar, Sylvester Akanbiri, a civilian employee of the Armed forces Johannes Zikpi and Senior Police Officer ACP Agordzo.

The state says it intends to call 19 witnesses if the case is sent to the High Court and rely on 113 exhibits.

Edward Kwabi Jnr

Broadcast journalist and head of TV3’s political desk, Edward Kwabi Jnr, has passed on.

He is reported to have died on Monday, March 2, 2020.

Family sources say the journalist has been sick since September 2019.

The late journalist was a presidential reporter during the former President John Mahama’s administration and Secretary of the Presidential Press Corps.

He was among the team of journalists who got involved in an accident at Afienya near Tema while covering President Mahama in August 2015.

It is unclear what ailment he was suffering from but sources said he had been complaining about his fractured leg occasioned by the accident.

Reports say he had been unwell since that accident shuttling between hospitals.

The ghastly accident took away the life of Samuel Nuamah, Ghanaian Times presidential correspondent at the then Flagstaff House.

Edward Kwabi’s leg got broken and was fixed with metal.

DGN learnt that just last week he shared on a platform with his former colleagues about the pain he was going through with other victims of the accident also narrating similar ordeal.

He was said to have complained about neglect by John Mahama who never met the press corps even after the accident leaving them to their fates.

“Nobody minded him and was always complaining of the pains”, a member of the then press corps told DGN when reached on phone yesterday.

Other victims of the accident are said to be also suffering with no support from John Mahama.

“Ato Kitoe is now walking with only one eye functioning. I won’t be surprised that the guy die out of the accident”, the Mahama press corps member said.

Rawlings Increases Bounty For Assemblyman’s Killers to Gh¢45,000

Marcus Mawutor Adzahli

Former President Jerry John Rawlings has offered Gh¢25,000 in addition to the earlier bounties offered towards the arrest of killers of the Sogakofe South Assemblyman who was brutally murdered last Sunday.

The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa, and the South Tongu DCE, Emmanuel Louis Agama, had earlier offered Gh¢10,000 each towards the death of Marcus Mawutor Adzahli last Monday, March 2, 2020.

The offer by the former president brings the total amount of bounty on the heads of the assailants to Gh¢45,000.

The former President made the offer in a statement issued on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 with the hope that it will help to gather reliable information leading to the arrest of Marcus’ attackers as well as culprits of a similar violent robbery in Vume; also in the same district about a month ago.

The statement also offered that apart from the Police informants are welcome to offer confidential information towards the arrest of all the assailants to the former President’s office directly on 020 073 6637.

Be that as it may, Flt Lt Rawlings who is a resident of the district, was quoted by the statement as saying, he was disgusted at the trend of violent attacks in the district.

He also described the death of the Assemblyman and Entrepreneur as a politically related murder.

He consoled with the family and residents for their lose and advised that although residents had the right to exercise their right to anger and protest, they should not to express them in the wrong direction or through the wrong action.

Marcus was stabbed, shot and killed last Sunday in the presence of his wife and kids when unknown assailants besieged his family house.
The robbers who had refused money offered them by the wife to save his husband, later took the money after killing him, injuring the wife and one of Marcus’ two girls.

Sources close to the family say, the wife who is believed to be pregnant and daughter are still on admission at the District Hospital. The victim of the Vume attack a month ago is also reported to be on admission at the Dzodze Catholic Hospital.

Although calm had returned to the town, residents staged two protests; one on Sunday and Monday to register their displeasure over the killing of Marcus and what they claimed is the high level of insecurity in the area.

The residents who blocked the main Accra to Aflao highway and besieged the District Police station to close it down accused the Police of negligence.

At least two protestors are reported to have been injured by stray bullets.

They have since issued a three-day ultimatum to the Police to make an arrest or be ready for more protests. They have also appealed to the Police High Command to transfer all officers in the area and replace them with new officers.

President Nominates 3 For Supreme Court

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has nominated three persons for appointment as Supreme Court justices one of them a top legal practitioner and two justices of the Court of Appeal.

The justices of the Court of Appeal are Mr. Justice Issifu Omoro Tanko Amadu and Mr. Justice Clemence J. Honyenuga, whilst the private legal practitioner is Yoni Kulendi.

The President’s decision was informed by a replacement response following the retirement of three Supreme Court justices.

The nominees will face a parliamentary committee on appointments, a procedure which is largely a formality although tough questions could pop up from the legislators.

The Supreme Court, as per the 1992 Constitution, is made up of the Chief Justice and not less than nine other justices of the Supreme Court.

The Chief Justice is appointed by the President acting in consultation with the Council of State and with the approval of Parliament.

The Supreme Court justices too are appointed by the President acting upon the Judicial Council and in consultation with the Council of State and the approval of Parliament.

Justice Tanko, as he is fondly called, is associated with many high-profile cases, one of them being in the soccer arena.

As chairman of the Ghana Remand Review Taskforce in July 2018, Justice Honyenuga challenged those who criticized the programme to base their criticisms on facts and figures.

According to him, their baseless and unconstructive criticisms are demoralizing those who are implementing the programme, which is geared towards decongesting the country’s prisons.

He threw the challenge to critics of the programme at the Sunyani Central Prison after three courts had acquitted and discharged 14 remand prisoners, convicted some and given bail to others.

Lawyer Kulendi is a high-notch legal practitioner with many successful cases to his credit.

He attended the University of Ghana, Legon, where he earned his LLB in 1992 before proceeding to the School of Law for his BL in 1994.

His appearance before the Parliamentary Appointments Committee will be exciting.

NLA Raids K’si Lotto Fraudsters

The suspect

The National Lottery Authority (NLA), in conjunction with the Lotto Marketing Companies, has assisted the Ashanti Regional Police Command to swoop on lotto fraudsters in the region.

In the process, the team managed to arrest one Richard Fordjour.

Upon his arrest, it was revealed that Fordjour, who allegedly owns a company called ‘The Rulers’, was said to be charging a rooftop commission of 40% through his unregistered business.

He was accused of running down the business of members of the Lotto Marketing Companies and a breach of NLA regulations.  Lotto Marketing Companies registered by the NLA pay 20%.

The Head of the Public Relations Unit of NLA,  Razak Opoku, who confirmed the arrest, said the payment of the ‘outrageous’ commission to the detriment of Lotto Marketing Companies would not be tolerated by the NLA, and would continue to go after the lotto fraudsters who are denying the government of the needed revenue.

A roadmap had been put in place to ensure both the Lotto Marketing Companies and the Private Lotto Operators would have the same commission, he said.

The NLA official said Fordjour had not made any effort to apply to the NLA for a licence but had been deceiving patrons of the games in the Ashanti Region that his business is licensed by the NLA.

“The company has not applied for a licence, let alone permitted the outrageous 40%,” he disclosed.

“The public is, therefore, encouraged to report any Private Lotto Operator suspected of not being a registered entity and paying outrageous commissions to the NLA or the police,” the Public Relations Officer stressed.

‘Coup ‘Plotters’ Wanted To Kill Akufo-Addo’

The suspects

The 10 persons alleged to have planned to destabilize the country and overthrow the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government have been committed to stand trial at the High Court.

This was after a Kaneshie District Court in Accra, presided over by Magistrate Eleanor Barnes-Botchway, held that the pieces of evidence provided by the prosecution against the accused persons, who are facing treason and other charges, are ‘overwhelming’ and the case must proceed.

Deadly Plan

The court heard how the accused persons were allegedly planning to capture the President, the Vice-President, the Speaker of Parliament, and the Chief of Staff, and also how to force the President to announce his overthrow once he was captured.

The accused persons were again said to have contemplated in the discussion whether or not to kill the President in the process of overthrowing the government and capturing him.

The accused persons, according to the prosecution, also discussed the procurement of electronic jamming devices and vehicles that would enable them to take over the National Communications Authority (NCA) and jam all radio stations with the exception of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).

Accused Persons

Dr. Frederick Yaw Mac-Palm, a medical officer and proprietor of the Citadel Hospital at Alajo, Accra, as well as an Assistant Commissioner of Police ACP/Dr.  Benjamin Agordzo, and a senior military officer, Col. Samuel Kojo Gameli, are before the court for their alleged involvement in the coup attempt.

Other accused persons charged in connection with the alleged coup plot include Donya Kafui aka Ezor, a local weapon manufacturer (blacksmith) from Alavanyo, and Bright Allan Debrah Ofosu, aka BB, both civilians.

The other military officers caught in the alleged coup plot apart from Col. are Gameli, Lance Corporal Ali Solomon, Lance Corporal Sylvester Akapewu, Lance Corporal Seidu Abubakar and WO II Esther Saan aka Mama Gee of the Military Academy and Training Schools (MATS) and also a civilian employee of the Ghana Armed Force, Johannes Zikpi.

Charges

The accused persons are facing five counts of treason felony, conspiracy, treason, abetment of treason felony, and possession of explosives and ammunition without lawful excuse.

Given that the case was still at the committal stages, the pleas of the accused persons were not taken as that was reserved for the High Court.

Bill of Indictment

The prosecution led by Winifred Sarpong, a Principal State Attorney, alongside Hilda Craig, a Senior State Attorney, yesterday presented the bill of indictment which included the brief fact of the case, as well as the summary of evidence and the list of exhibits.

Big Denial

As part of the committal process, each of the accused persons was then given their turn to give a statement to the court in relation to the charges that have been levelled against them by the state.

They all denied the allegations and insisted that they had never at any point in time, as being alleged by the prosecution, met to discuss any plans to overthrow the constitutionally elected government.

Agordzo Submission

ACP Agordzo, for instance, told the court that he believes the prosecution has an ‘ulterior motive’ to destroy his carrier and also to gag him.

Col. Gameli also denied the allegations, adding that with his experience as a senior military officer  all the facts presented by the prosecution do not come close to a coup “because I know what destabilization of a country or a government is because of what I witnessed in Rwanda and Liberia.”

Dr. Mac-Palm who is said to be the ring leader of the group also said the allegations against him are ploys to cripple his organisation, Take Action Ghana (TAG), which was planning to demonstrate against the government in the aftermath of the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence.

Exhibits

The prosecution told the court that they were going to rely on 19 witnesses and a total of 113 exhibits during the trial at the High Court.

Some of the exhibits include 72 live ammunition, seven (7) locally manufactured gun barrels, one (1) foreign pistol, one (1) revolver pistol, three (3) locally manufactured gun barrels, 22 improvised explosive devices (IEDs), three (3) smoke grenades, among others.

The exhibits were presented in court and the accused persons and their lawyers had the chance to have a look at them.

Order

Magistrate Barnes-Botchway, after listening to the prosecution, defence lawyers and the accused persons, said the evidence against the accused persons were overwhelming and committed them to stand trial at the High Court on April 6, 2020.

The accused person except ACP Agordzo, WO II Esther Saan and Col. Gameli were remanded in the custody of the Nsawam Prison, while WO II Saan who was granted bail but could not meet the conditions and the fact that she is a nursing mother was to remain in military custody.

Col. Gameli was also to remain in military custody while ACP Agordzo was also to remain on his bail granted him by an Accra High Court.

A former member of the Association’s Executive Committee Abdulai Alhassan also faces two charges namely conspiracy to commit fraud and fraud.

Principal State Attorney Victoria Asiedua told an Accra High Court Wednesday that the two individuals executed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on behalf of a non-existent company claiming to be attracting sponsorship for the Ghana Premier League.

They are further alleged to have demanded $12 million from the supposed investors promising to land them major contracts in Ghana.

This money the prosecution says Mr Nyantakyi said will be distributed as follows; $5 million for the President, $3 million for the Vice President, $2 million for the Roads and Highway’s Minister, $1 million for his Deputy with the rest reserved for Mr Nyantakyi and Mr Alhassan.

Resurrection Power Debunks Allegations

The Resurrection Power and Living Bread (RPLIB) Ministries International has denied claims by two former members of the church that the leadership has been embezzling funds belonging to the church.

The claims went viral on social media platforms and the church said the former Western Regional Administrator of the church, Isaac Manu, and former Western Regional Overseer, Apostle Paul Anane, were allegedly behind them.

But the church believes the accusations are calculated attempts by the duo to tarnish the image of the church and bring it into disrepute, with the General Overseer, Archbishop Akwasi Asare Bediako, also made a target.

Addressing a news conference in Takoradi, the Eastern Regional Overseer of the church, Bishop Nana Bugyei, popularly known as Onyame Akoa Kwame Nti, alleged the two former members were on the mission to destroy the hard-earned image of RPLIB.

According to him, the two, who have since formed their own church, made similar allegations in 2019 that turned out to be false eventually.

Bishop Bugyei said the church was not surprised that new allegations are being thrown at its leadership, with the intent to court disaffection for the leaders and cause the eventual collapse of the church.

He asserted that Apostle Anane appeared to be an embittered man after he was recalled to the headquarters of the church by the General Overseer following a case of embezzlement levelled against him in 2017.

He narrated that the apostle, on assumption of office in 2014, took the building and property committee of the church and also personally took charge of the management and finances of the church’s rental properties, including warehouses.

Bishop Bugyei claimed Apostle Anane failed to render accounts to the church, which development sparked confusion in the church, thereby forcing Archbishop Asare Bediako to set up a new management committee to steer affairs.

He said the apostle bypassed the committee and embezzled some funds accrued from rent of the warehouses, resulting in his sacking from the church.

Mr. Vincent Kwamitse Kaledzi, CEO,Star Oil Company 3rd right and Mr.Francis Mawuena Kalitsi, 2nd right, Chairman of KKTR on the Vessel at the Commissioning. On the extreme right is the Chief of Sedorm-Yiti, Nene AyereyDolerII

The Kete Krachi Timber Recovery (KKTR) Limited — operators of the Volta Lake Timber concession for the salvage of timber from under the Lake Volta — has named its new Fishing Trawler after Mr. Vincent Kwamitse Kaledzi, Chief Executive Officer of Star Oil Ghana.

At a ceremony at Sedorm-Yiti, near Akosombo in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region over the weekend, Francis Mawuena Kalitsi, Chairman of KKTR, said the naming of the trawler after Mr. Kaledzi was “a testament to the contribution and crucial role played by Mr. Kaledzi in the operations and the very existence of KKTR.”

He said the professional and fatherly advice offered the company in its formative years, when Mr. Kaledzi was the then President of the National Inland Canoe Fishermen Council (NICFC), had been the guiding post for the current state of KKTR.

In response, Mr. Kaledzi, winner of the 2nd national best farmer award in 2003, said the major ingredients for the success of any enterprise are transparency, honesty, fairness and integrity, adding that those were qualities the management of KKTR had maintained so far.

He said the Volta Lake provides livelihood for 1,600 communities in 32 districts in eight regions and is, therefore, important that any activity on the lake must take cognizance of the interest of the people as KKTR continues to do.

Elkin Pianin, Chief Executive of KKTR, said the new vessel added to the fleet of vessels of the company on the lake and marked an important evolution of its operations in addition to its relationship with the fishing communities and other stakeholders.

Mr. Jacob Ageke Tetteh, President of the National Inland Canoe Fishermen Council, was of the hope that the company would continue to live in harmony and co-operation with members of the council for the benefit of both parties.

Apostle Eric Nyamekye (arrowed) joining the members to clean the Madina Market

The Church of Pentecost over the weekend embarked on a massive clean-up exercise throughout the country to rid the country of filth.

The national exercise was participated by about 2.7 million members in the various 1,450 administrative districts of the church.

Dubbed ‘Nationwide Environmental Care Campaign,’ the initiative is an effort by the church to partner with the government and Zoomlion Ghana Limited to ensure a clean Ghana.

Some chiefs, Muslim clerics, metropolitan, municipal and district chief executives, parliamentarians, assembly members, among others, also participated in the exercise.

The Chairman of the church, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, joined the members at Madina to clean the Madina Market and its environs.

He was joined by the Deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister, Elizabeth Sackey; the International Missions Director of the church, Apostle Emmanuel Gyesi-Addo; the Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group, Joseph Siaw Agyepong, among other personalities.

The General Secretary of the church, Apostle Alexander Nana Yaw Kumi-Larbi, also joined the Roman Ridge District in the Ayawaso West Municipality to clean the Airport City area.

Speaking to the media after the exercise, Apostle Eric Nyamekye said, “The Lord has placed it on the heart of the leadership of the church to lead a national crusade against littering and abuse of the environment.”

He said they were complementing government’s efforts in waging a war against insanitary conditions in the country.

He said since 2018, the church had launched ‘Environmental Care Campaign’ as part of the five-year strategic vision to use its platforms to educate the members on the need to work towards the protection of the environment.

Apostle Nyamekye urged the public to support the effort by the government and the waste management companies to clean Ghana, adding “this campaign is not a Church of Pentecost matter; everybody should come on board because mosquitoes, for instance, do not know a Pentecost member or non-Pentecost member, a politician or ordinary citizen; we are all at risk.”

Apostle Nyamekye also called on the state authorities to enforce the environmental by-laws so as to sustain the effort of making Ghana a clean place, saying “we as a church have intensified public education on environmental cleanliness so that every Ghanaian would do the right thing to preserve the environment. If we all change our negative attitudes towards the environment, Ghana will become a better place.”

TESCON members at the workshop. INSET: Some of the executives

THE University of Ghana (UG) chapter of the Tertiary Students Confederation (TESCON) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has organized a workshop to sensitize its members to the upcoming new voters’ registration exercise to be conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC).

Rockson Obeng, a member of UG TESCON, stated that the workshop was held at the instance of the 2015 BBC report which indicated that Ghana’s electoral roll was bloated.

“Based on this, we decided to support the EC in its quest to conduct a new voter registration by educating our members on the exercise for them to carry the message across,” he noted.

Speaking to DAILY GUIDE after the workshop, Mr. Obeng said members of the UG TESCON fraternity were duly prepared to support the commission in whatever way possible for it to carry out its mandate.

He, therefore, entreated all TESCON members across the country to get involved to make the commission’s work successful.

The Deputy National Communications Director of TESCON, Yaw Preko, who addressed the workshop, took participants through the importance of voting and why there was the need for NPP to support the EC.

According to Captain Quainoo, being optimistic and putting effort into working hard can lead one to achieve greater heights.

“I have always wanted to become a pilot since I was a child. Unfortunately, the journey became murkier along the line. From a very poor background, it was not easy for me at all, but with perseverance and good faith, I never gave up my dreams,” he added.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Peace FM’s Emmanuel Bekoe at the Headquarters of Emirates in Dubai, Captain Quainoo said it was quite worrying to see a section of the youth give up their dreams easily when they were faced with complex challenges. “Whenever you quit, you have less knowledge of what you could achieve,” he said.

Touching on the much talked about Dubai Expo 2020 that seeks to connect 193 countries in Dubai, Captain Quainoo mentioned that it was a rare opportunity for him to fly participants and visitors to Dubai.

‘The advantages and opportunities of Dubai Expo 2020 are huge and I am looking forward to discharging my duties creditably. Fortunately, here at Emirates, the work gets easier as a result of our hardworking team,” he concluded.

Captain Quainoo rose to prominence when he became the first Ghanaian to fly the world’s largest passenger aircraft, Emirates Airbus A380 to Ghana.

He said the youth must not be reduced from the top of their humanity to become tools for visiting violence against political opponent and this menace was something all must take seriously.

Speaking with ardor, he revealed that “We as religious people, also want to partner with all civil society organizations who share those common believes and values particularly in matters that has to do with the promotion of peace in the country to curb this menace of vigilantism from our system.

“We Christians and Muslims in this country, by our sacred text, are encouraged to care for the flock that we lead to guarantee their physical and spiritual peace and security.”

“We will intervene on the side of our youth by educating, training and healing them against these undignified practices and abuses.

The Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council, George Amoh, in an address said mistrust of state institutions like the police and the Electoral Commission as well as unemployment of the youth were some of the causes of vigilantism.

Head of programmes, Caritas Ghana, David Issaka, said FAITH would organize a dialogue session between political parties and religious leaders on vigilantism and they would support ex-vigilante members, educate them and take them through psychological counsel before liking them to an e-waste environmental project that would fetch them money.

Present for the launch included Hajia Ayishetu Abdul – Kadiri, chairperson FIATH in Ghana Alliance, Lucile Anan, Regional Director of NCCE, representatives of the various faith based organizations and others.
